The FIA World Rallycross Championship, which comes to Lydden Hill on May 27-28, burst into life at Barcelona on Sunday (April 2) with a stunning start for the double German touring car champion Timo Scheider. The German has only just switched to rallycross and on his debut for the MJP squad his Ford Fiesta won all four qualifying races.
Scheider said “I was very surprised to become top qualifier after barely any testing. This is one of the most special moments in my racing life. I have spent 16 years racing in the DTM, but right now I am loving life in rallycross.”
But at the start of the Final it was world champion Mattias Ekstrom who seized the advantage with his factory-supported Audi and then he held on to take a narrow win over Scheider. He said “I am super-impressed with Timo – to come from a privately-run team and to be leading after all four qualifying races is very impressive.”
Norway’s Andreas Bakkerud who finished third in the Hoonigan team’s Ford Focus said “There is so much competition now in world rallycross with five different manufacturers. I love this sport and it’s awesome to see private drivers succeed, so a big well done to Timo.”
Timo will not be present at World RX of Great Britain due to clashing commitments. His place in the MJP team will be taken by former British Touring Car Champion Andrew Jordan, who himself took victory in race three of the opening round of the BTCC on Sunday.
“It’s brilliant to join MJP Racing Team Austria for the British round of the 2017 FIA World Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill. Rallycross holds great memories for me from when I started racing at 14 years old to standing on a World Rallycross podium, I love the sport and am hugely proud to compete at my home event," explained Jordan.
